Weight Loss Q & A

What is medical weight loss?

With medical weight loss at Jarvis Family Medical Practice, patients have the advantage of science on their side.

Karla works with each patient to design a plan using OPTIFAST® that includes diet and exercise, as well as medications that can suppress appetite and speed up fat burning, helping patients achieve results more quickly.

All medical weight loss programs include professional supervision by Karla and require regular visits and treatments, so patients can receive the support they need while having their health continuously managed.

What is OPTIFAST?

At Jarvis Family Medical Practice, Karla offers OPTIFAST, a comprehensive weight management program that lasts for 26 weeks. The typical participant can lose up to 50 pounds during the program.

OPTIFAST is only available with medical supervision and must be part of a comprehensive treatment program that involves behavior modification for long-term weight guidance. Jarvis Family Medical Practice monitors you throughout the program.

OPTIFAST features four phases:

  • Screening
  • Active weight loss
  • Transition to a whole-foods plan
  • Maintenance

During the active weight-loss phase that lasts about 12 weeks, you consume a full meal-replacement diet with OPTIFAST products.

Throughout the program, you receive counseling support in groups and one-on-one. Plus, you receive a plan to help you become more active – always taking into account your current fitness level and any limitations.

You eventually transition back to more whole foods while learning how to make good choices and adhere to smart portion control.

Do prescription appetite suppressant medications work?

Prescription medications help reduce hunger and food cravings and speed up metabolic function to help patients burn fat more quickly. By diminishing food cravings, patients are less apt to overeat or snack between meals.

Karla also provides patients taking prescription appetite suppressants with vitamin B12 injections on a regular basis, which helps improve metabolism and boost energy, helping expedite results.

Patients taking prescription appetite suppressants from Karla must come for regular visits so she can check your progress and ensure you are maintaining optimal health.
